Overcome By Evil
Have you ever described anyone as “pure evil?” Why? Normally, it is because that person does things that hurt others, either emotionally, physically, or spiritually. The person seems to be focused only on himself and his own personal gain. But why does someone become evil? They certainly weren’t born that way. I find it interesting that the apostle Paul exhorts, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12.21). When we are mistreated, it is easy to be overwhelmed by evil, allowing it to control us. We want to harm the person who harmed us. We want justice. But is that the appropriate response for a child of God? Should I want to do unto others as they do unto me when it is wicked? Is seeking revenge justifiable? Just as God told Cain, “Sin is crouching at the door,” we must realize the same (Genesis 4.7). That sin is always there and waiting to enter into us at every opportunity. When I have my feelings hurt, or when jealousy overtakes me, or when I feel neglected and abused, I want to lash out. How can I overcome my desire to do evil?
