Missed Opportunities
Have you ever heard the idiom, “You can’t see the forest for the trees.” It means that you are unable to see the overall picture because you are focused on the minor details. Or, failing to see the bigger picture due to an obsession with the smaller parts. On several occasions, Jesus healed on the Sabbath; but the Pharisees were so obsessed over violating the laws of the Sabbath, that they did not see the good being done; thus, failing to praise God for His marvelous works. I believe we see the same thing in the situation of Mary and Martha. Martha was so obsessed with the meal and Mary not helping her, that she complained to Jesus (Luke 10.38-42). Jesus told Martha that Mary was focused on listening to Him which was much more important than the meal. Would you say that Martha “couldn’t see the forest for the trees”?
