Lord, Help Me Look Up
How do you keep the things of the world from distracting you from God? Do you remember the apostle John saying, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever” (I John 2.15-17). But are we not a product of our culture? Have we not been born into a nation that has preconceived standards of what is acceptable living? We all want to have things that make our lives easier and more enjoyable. We also want our children to have a better childhood than we did. Where does it stop? Have we become more about justifying and rationalizing what we want rather than focusing on eternity?
