Is God There?
When the most difficult moments of life come upon us, is God there? Does He care when we are overtaken with grief? When I was in elementary school, a little five-year-old boy from church was hit by a school bus and killed. His mother grieved for years and would often start crying in the middle of worship. Some questioned, “Where was God? Why didn’t He save little Eddie?” Many grieving souls, with sincere faith, struggle with these sorts of tragedies. Our souls agonize with those subjected to such great loss. How do we help them? In addition to being there and striving to comfort them, it is good to call to memory how much God loves us (John 3.16), and that He also experienced tremendous suffering and pain when His only Son was crucified by wicked men. God knows what we face in life and is there with us as we struggle. When we study our Bibles, we see many righteous and godly men who suffered death. James, the brother of John, was put to death by King Herod (Acts 12.2). Stephen was stoned to death by the Jews (Acts 7.59, 60). There’s a great list of people who suffered and were put to death for their faith (Hebrews 11.36-38).
