Do You See and Hear?
After Jesus spoke the parable of the Sower, His disciples came and said to Him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” (Matthew 13.10). Do you remember Jesus’ answer? Jesus said, “This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand” (13.13). Was Jesus intentionally hiding the truth from certain people? I really do not think so. It seems that all would have understood the natural meaning of the parable. But though they understood the story, they did not understand its spiritual significance. They were able to physically see with their eyes, and they could physically hear with their ears; yet, they did not understand truths being put before them. Could it be said that a person does not understand truths which he/she does not desire to know? Jesus quoted from Isaiah 6.9, 10 to show how what was occurring was fulfillment of prophecy. Thus, just as prophesied, there would be people who would not accept the teachings of the Savior.
