Do I Have To Come To Worship?
Is coming to worship essential? Is it okay if I just stay at home and watch worship services on the television? Many enjoy plopping down on the couch or in their favorite chair, in their pajamas and a cup of coffee in their hand, and viewing services at home. Am I pleasing God when I do? First, let’s notice John 4.23, 24 “But the hour is coming, and is now hear, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” God wants us to worship Him. The prerequisite for worship that pleases Him is that it must be done “in spirit and in truth,” i.e., with the right attitude of heart and according to His word (John 17.17). Well, I can certainly do that at home. But what about the Hebrew writer saying, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day draying near” (Hebrews 10.24, 25). There is purpose in coming together as the body of Christ to worship God. Fellowship with other Christians who encourage you to love and good works is a blessing. Your spirit is truly uplifted when you are worshiping with other Christians. With the world growing more immoral day by day, I need all the encouragement I can get. Do you realize how coming together can strengthen your faith? Yes, some people are not physically able to come to worship; but if I am, I should make every effort to be here, in the presence of God, to worship with the saints. Coming to worship should never be a “have to,” but a “want to.” I look forward to coming to worship, do you?
