God Is A Jealous God?
Did you know that the Bible teaches that God is a jealous God? In the giving of the Ten Commandments, God said, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20.3). He goes on to say in verse 5, “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God.” How are we to understand God’s jealousy if the Bible teaches jealousy is a sin (Galatians 5.20)? In context of Exodus 20, God tells the people that He commands worship to Him and Him alone. He would not tolerate worship of other gods. God expected total devotion from the children of Israel, not merely partial or lukewarm piety. God had a right to be jealous over something that only He deserved. God is a jealous God in the sense that He protects what is rightfully His. He will not share His glory and praise with another. In Isaiah 42.8, God said, “I am the LORD; that is My name; My glory I give to no other, nor My praise to carved idols.”
