How Broken Are You?
In Japan, there is a form of pottery called Kintsugi, where the cracks in a broken vessel are filled with gold, silver, or platinum in order to repair it. Rather than hide the cracks, the brokenness of the vessel is highlighted by mending it with a stronger substance that increases the strength, beauty, and value of the item whose brokenness has rendered it useless. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Until a pot is broken, Kintsugi is not possible. What a beautiful picture of what God does for us! In our brokenness, God puts us back together, fills us with Himself, and makes us stronger, more beautiful, and more valued as He makes all things new. Unless we are aware of our brokenness, we cannot be made whole again. Herein lies the beauty of the gospel: “we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time, we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope” (Timothy Keller). When a deep understanding of the gospel truth sinks into our hearts, reorienting our lives according to God’s plan, it is then that we are made stronger and increase in beauty and strength in our lives and in the eyes of out Lord! Do you need God to put you back together today? Gary
