Why Are You So Stubborn?
Has anyone ever called you stubborn? There is an illustration about a customer who walked into a clothing shop and asked to see the pants that were advertised in the paper that day. The clerk responded, “We don’t have an ad in the paper today.” She insisted he was wrong, so the clerk got a copy of the paper, and they went through it, eventually landing on an ad for pants from another local store. Exasperated, the customer glared at him and said, “In my newspaper, the ad was for this store!” Why are people so stubborn? Stubborn people have trouble admitting they are wrong; often refusing to change their position or opinion. Is being stubborn a sin? It can be if one refuses to live by the teachings of God. In the Old Testament, before northern Israel fell because of their rebellion against all the commandments of God, God sent prophet after prophet trying to get them to repent and return to Him. In II Kings 17.14, we read, “But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God.” Their stubbornness to repent finally led to their destruction. Are we just as stubborn when it comes to putting sin out of our lives? Are we just as stubborn when it comes to obeying the commandments of God? God calls upon us to be transformed by His Word (Romans 12.1, 2). How compliant and obedient are you? Do you need to soften your heart and return to God today?
